Ascend Fine Art Portfolio
The Ascend Fine Art Portfolio features the works of 13 contemporary Indigenous womxn. The goal of this project is to highlight the unique issues Indigenous womxn face and support the equitable representation of Indigenous voices in the fine art institution. This project was awarded a 2019 Regional Arts and Culture Council grant and is co-sponsored by Speedball.
Ka’ila Farrell-Smith (Klamath Modoc) a 2019-2021 Oregon Fields Artist Fellow, is the first artist to begin work on the Ascend Printmaking Portfolio working in residence with Paul Mullowney on the Mailander Press at Pacific Northwest College of Art. During her first session she worked on a 16 monotype series, which will be a portfolio of 35 prints by the end of the project. Artists Stephanie Fogel and Kanani Miyamoto invited Ka’ila, their former mentor with the Yehaw exhibition in 2018, to work on this new iteration of Indigenous womxn art collaboration.
